Third-Party Only vs Comprehensive Cover

Updated Oct 7, 2026 ยท Daniel Moreau ยท 6 min read

Third-party is the legal minimum in many countries. Comprehensive is not always more expensive.

Car insurance usually comes in levels of cover. The basic level protects other people; higher levels protect your car too.

Many drivers assume the lowest level is the cheapest โ€” but that is not always true.

Third-party only

Covers injury to other people and damage to their property. It does not cover damage to your own car. In many places, it is the legal minimum.

Third-party, fire and theft

Adds cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.

Comprehensive

Covers your own car too, even if an accident was your fault, subject to the excess. Often includes extras like windscreen cover.

Why comprehensive can be cheaper

Some insurers price third-party policies higher because they are often chosen by higher-risk drivers. Always compare quotes for each level. See our guide to liability, collision, and comprehensive cover.

Choosing the right level

If your car is worth very little, third-party cover might make sense โ€” but only after comparing prices, since comprehensive can cost the same or less. If you have finance on the car, the lender usually requires comprehensive cover. Consider how you would pay to repair or replace the car if you caused an accident: if you could not easily afford it, comprehensive is usually the safer choice.
