Why You Should Never Auto-Renew Your Car Insurance Without Checking

Your renewal quote is the insurer’s opening offer. Ten minutes of comparison can pay off.

Many policies renew automatically, and it is tempting to let them. But prices for the same cover can vary widely between insurers, and your circumstances may have changed.

In some countries, rules now stop insurers charging renewing customers more than new ones, but it still pays to check.

When to start

Begin comparing around three to four weeks before the renewal date. Some studies by price comparison sites have found that quotes taken a few weeks in advance are cheaper than those taken the day before.

Compare like for like

  • Level of cover: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, or liability only
  • Excess amounts, both compulsory and voluntary
  • Courtesy car, windscreen, and legal cover
  • Whether your no-claims discount is protected

Update your details

Changes in mileage, address, job title, parking, or named drivers can affect the price. Always give accurate information — mistakes can invalidate a claim later. Remove named drivers who no longer use the car.

Call your current insurer

If you find a better quote, ask your existing insurer whether they can match it. Some will; others will not. Either way, you are better informed. If you switch, cancel auto-renewal so you are not charged for two policies.
