How to Make a Car Insurance Claim

Report quickly, gather evidence, and keep a record of everything.

Making a claim can feel stressful, but the process is easier if you are organised.

Most insurers want to hear about incidents promptly, even if you do not end up claiming.

Gather information

  • Photos of damage and the scene
  • Other driver’s details and insurance
  • Witness contacts
  • Police reference number if applicable

Report to your insurer

Call or use the online claim form. Give accurate facts and avoid admitting fault at the scene.

Repairs and assessment

The insurer may send an assessor or ask you to use an approved repairer. Ask about guarantees and courtesy cars.

Keep records

Keep copies of emails, notes of calls, and receipts. See our claim timeline guide for what happens next.

Things that can slow a claim down

Late reporting, missing photos, and inconsistent accounts are the most common reasons claims take longer. So is uncertainty over who was at fault, especially without witnesses or dashcam footage. Answer the insurer’s questions promptly, keep your story factual, and tell them if anything changes, such as new injuries appearing days later. If another driver’s insurer contacts you directly, refer them to your own insurer.
