Footage can prove fault and speed up claims.
What this article covers
Dashcams record the road ahead and sometimes behind.
They can be valuable evidence.
Benefits
- Evidence of who was at fault
- Protection against crash-for-cash fraud
- Faster claim resolution
Legal considerations
Mount without blocking vision. Privacy rules vary by country.
Saving footage
Save footage immediately after an incident.
Choosing a dashcam
Look for good video resolution, wide-angle lenses, night recording, loop recording, and a G-sensor that automatically saves footage after an impact. Front-and-rear cameras record more of what happens. GPS records speed and location, which can help evidence but can also show if you were speeding. Mount the camera where it does not block the driver’s view, ideally behind the rear-view mirror.
Check footage occasionally to make sure the camera is working and the time and date are correct.
