Accident in a Rental Car: What to Do Step by Step

Stay safe, record everything, and contact the rental company quickly. Here is the order to do it in.

An accident in a rental car — especially abroad — can be confusing. You may be unsure who to call or what paperwork you need.

Following a clear sequence protects you and makes any claim easier.

At the scene

  • Make sure everyone is safe and call emergency services if anyone is hurt
  • Move vehicles out of traffic if it is safe and legal to do so
  • Exchange details with other drivers, including insurance
  • Photograph the scene, damage, number plates, and road signs
  • Get witness names and contact details

Paperwork

Many countries use a standard accident report form, sometimes kept in the glovebox. Fill it in carefully with the other driver, and do not sign anything in a language you do not understand. If police attend, ask for a report or reference number.

Contact the rental company

Call the rental company’s emergency number — usually on the key fob, windscreen sticker, or contract. They will tell you whether the car can be driven and arrange a replacement if needed. Report the incident even if damage seems minor.

Afterwards

Keep copies of everything. If you have excess insurance or credit card cover, notify them quickly and check their claim deadlines. Review any charges the rental company sends and ask for itemised invoices. See our rental car damage dispute guide.
