Inspect a Rental Car Before You Drive Away

A few minutes with your phone camera at pick-up can protect you from damage charges you did not cause.

Disputes over damage are one of the most common rental car complaints. Many of them arise because existing damage was not recorded before the rental began.

A careful inspection at pick-up, and again at drop-off, gives you evidence if the rental company later claims you caused damage.

At pick-up

Walk around the car and photograph or video every panel, including the roof, bumpers, and wheels
Check the windscreen for chips and cracks
Photograph the interior, fuel level, and mileage
Make sure all existing damage is marked on the rental agreement

Check that the car is safe

Look at tyres, lights, and wipers. Make sure you know how to operate key controls.

At drop-off

Take another set of photos in the same way, ideally with a time stamp, and ask for a staff member to inspect the car with you. Get a signed receipt confirming the condition and fuel level if possible.

If you are charged later

Ask for evidence such as photos and repair invoices. Compare with your own photos. Dispute charges in writing promptly and keep all correspondence.
