Van Rental Insurance for Moving House

Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Daniel Moreau · 5 min read

Height, width, and excess are the main concerns when hiring a van.

Hiring a van for a move saves money, but vans are bigger than most people drive.

Damage is common.

Insurance basics

Van excesses are often high. Check excess reduction and whether roof damage is covered.

Licence check

Check your licence allows the van weight.

Driving tips

  • Know the height
  • Use mirrors
  • Take wide turns
  • Load evenly

Goods in transit

Rental insurance usually does not cover belongings. Check home insurance.

Inspect and photograph

Vans are often hired many times and may have existing dents, especially on the roof and rear corners. Walk around the van with the rental company before setting off, photograph every side including the roof if possible, and make sure all damage is recorded on the contract. Check the fuel level and mileage, and keep the photos until any deposit is returned.
