One-Way Car Rentals: Fees, Insurance, and Tips

Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Daniel Moreau · 5 min read

Picking up in one city and dropping off in another is convenient, but fees vary widely.

One-way rentals are great for road trips and relocations, but companies often charge drop-off fees to cover returning the car.

A little research can keep costs down.

Understand the fees

Drop-off fees range from small to very large, especially across borders. Some routes between busy locations have little or no fee.

Ways to save

  • Compare airport and city locations
  • Check different companies and comparison sites
  • Look for relocation deals where companies need cars moved
  • Book early

Insurance considerations

Make sure insurance covers every region you will drive through. Cross-border one-way rentals may need extra documentation and cover. See our cross-border rental guide.

Return checks

Photograph the car at pickup and drop-off, keep fuel receipts, and get a signed return receipt, especially if staff are not present.

Read the mileage terms

Some rentals include unlimited mileage on round trips but cap it on one-way hires, charging per mile or kilometre above a limit. On a long relocation drive that can add up fast. Check the cap against your planned route, including detours, and compare it with a quote that includes unlimited mileage — the higher base price is sometimes cheaper overall.
