Rental Counter Upsells: What to Accept and Decline
Updated Oct 24, 2026 · Daniel Moreau · 6 min read
Upgrades, insurance add-ons, GPS, and prepaid fuel can double the price. Know what you need beforehand.
What this article covers
Rental desks often push extras when you arrive tired after a flight. Some are useful; many are not.
Deciding in advance makes it easier to say no.
Common upsells
- Excess reduction or “super cover”
- Larger car upgrades
- Satellite navigation
- Prepaid fuel
- Roadside assistance
- Additional drivers
- Child seats
Often worth considering
Child seats if you cannot bring your own, an additional driver if someone else will drive, and some form of excess cover — either the company’s or a standalone policy bought in advance.
Often unnecessary
Sat-nav when your phone works, prepaid fuel if you will not use a full tank, and upgrades you did not plan for. See our fuel policies guide.
Read before signing
Check the final contract matches what you agreed. Some charges are added by default unless declined.
