Driving in the USA as a Visitor: Insurance and Rules

Updated Oct 23, 2026 · Daniel Moreau · 7 min read

Liability cover, state rules, and right turns on red — what overseas visitors should know.

The US is a classic road-trip destination, but its insurance and driving rules can be unfamiliar to overseas visitors.

Rules vary between states.

Liability insurance

Minimum liability cover required by state law can be low compared with potential claims. Many visitors buy supplemental liability insurance from the rental company or through packages that include it.

Damage waivers

Loss damage waivers (LDW or CDW) cover damage to the rental car. Check whether packages bought from your home country include it.

Road rules

  • Right turn on red is often allowed after stopping, unless signed
  • School bus stop signs require traffic to stop in many states
  • Speed limits are in miles per hour
  • Four-way stops — first to arrive goes first

Licences

Many states accept foreign licences for visitors, sometimes with an International Driving Permit. See our IDP guide.
