Renting Scooters and Mopeds on Holiday

Licences, helmets, and travel insurance exclusions are common pitfalls.
What this article covers
Renting a scooter can be a fun way to explore. But accidents are common, and insurance often does not cover them.
Check the rules first.
Licence requirements
Many countries require a motorcycle licence or specific category for scooters above a certain engine size. Riding without the correct licence can invalidate insurance.
Travel insurance
- Many policies exclude scooters unless you hold a valid licence
- Helmets usually must be worn
- Engine size limits apply
- Alcohol-related accidents are excluded
Rental insurance
Rental cover for scooters may be basic. Check excess and theft cover.
Safety
Wear a helmet and protective clothing, ride defensively, and avoid unfamiliar roads at night.
Check the bike and paperwork
Before riding away, inspect brakes, tyres, lights, and the horn, and photograph any existing damage. Make sure you receive the rental contract and insurance documents, and that the helmet fits properly — many rental helmets are poorly fitted or damaged. Ask what happens if the scooter is stolen and whether you are liable for the full value. Avoid leaving your passport as a deposit.
